Most White people, even liberal White folks, say they want equality for African Americans, that pie in the sky fantasy of us being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. The problem is they don’t want to give up anything to make equity happen which leads to that pie in the sky dream of equality we can’t seem to ever achieve.
Mitch McConnell said this week what too many White people in America believe — they’ve done enough where slavery is concerned and they have no obligation to make things right. Reading his words is one thing, but hearing his smut mouth say we Black folks should be happy with what White folks have done for us already is some of the boldest, most racist stuff I’ve seen in quite a while. It pours salt in old wounds and reaffirms our physical, mental, emotional, and financial well-being is never a real concern to America.
Well, if it’s not the responsibility of the White folks of today to pay for the inequity of slavery and all inequities of those descendants which are also the same folks who benefit today from BLACK inequality and inequity in America, then who’s responsibility is it? Black people have never really had anything we can say we got from the government because of America’s historic inequity.
Anything White people have ever given to us they’ve taken back!
For starters, how about the broken promise of the 40-acres and a mule the federal government promised our ancestors? The land promised to (and gave to) freed slaves was eventually given back to the treasonous slave owners who started the Civil War to keep their slaves. Another broken promise of America is the Political Empowerment of Blacks through voting rights. Whites keep taking our right to vote away from us via voter suppression, laws that permanently strip away the rights of over-policed Black communities, purging, and outright cheating. Even so-called Progressives have accepted America’s racism in national and local politics. Instead of studying it and preventing the disenfranchisement of Black voters, they ignore it and tell Black voters it’s a state problem (i.e. state’s rights). That’s racist.
That’s progressive inequality which leads to persistent inequity.
Another of America’s broken promises is Access to Quality Education for slaves, freedmen, and Blacks. For example, in 1740, my old home state of South Carolina passed the following legislation: “Whereas, the having slaves taught to write, or suffering them to be employed in writing, may be attended with great inconveniences; Be it enacted, that all and every person and persons whatsoever, who shall hereafter teach or cause any slave or slaves to be taught to write, or shall use or employ any slave as a scribe, in any manner of writing whatsoever, hereafter taught to write, every such person or persons shall, for every such offense, forfeit the sum of one hundred pounds, current money.”
This was a law on the books meant Whites could read and write while Blacks and slaves could not. The lack of equality lead to the vast inequity we have today.
My family still lives in this state. The inequity in how funds and resources were distributed impacted the learning of Blacks in the state greatly. It still does today. Just read about the state’s corridor of shame and the nearly 20-year battle to get the state to do right by rural communities which are mostly poor and Black.
To vote, America subjected Blacks to all sort of foolishness Whites didn’t have to do, like taking literacy tests before they could vote. How could Blacks pass literacy tests given by Whites, if White folks were preventing us from going to school to become literate? And let’s not forget Whites were closing and burning down our schools. White people really believe they don’t owe Black people anything.
If White people cheated that means they won their advantages unfairly. You need to make amends and pay up. If White people can’t see the inequality and inequity today from their past and current behaviors and advantages, then all hope is lost for America. America needs to make reparations a priority. If our Black tax dollars can go to hurricane relief, farm bailouts for stupid decisions made by White men (and not the one Black president America has ever had), entertainment venues owned by rich White men and women, and other government subsidized projects for the benefit of Whiteness, then White dollars can go towards reparations.
Because it’s all about investing in all the people, right? Nope.
Achieving equality means White people must not only admit they’ve had a 400 year head start White people, but they must also admit that they’ve had the head start because they’ve been unfair and partial to Whiteness in every way, shape, and form in America. That’s the opposite of equity.
It’s why we need reparations.
America Has Never Attempted to Do Right By Blacks
We’ve never had equity in America as far as African Americans are concerned. Ever.
Equity in America would be some law that developed alongside common law to remedy the defects in fairness and justice in America and administered in special courts. America has never had such a law. Therefore Mitch McConnell cannot say America has done enough. America has done nothing fair for Black people. Something, without fairness, is nothing. Like the Civil Rights Act which was supposed to be just about Black people, but somehow everything and the kitchen sink got included in the Act, to include White women who were only second to White women at the top of the supremacy food chain.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, was a piece of legislation that created equality for everyone in America, not just Black folks. And even though we have this 55-year-old piece of legislation on paper, we all know discrimination happens every single day against Black folks. If we aren’t equally employed and paid the same wages for the same work, how do we ever get to equity?
America’s Discrimination Never Ended
Blacks are passed over for jobs and promotions, mistreated while being served in public spaces, Black schools are neglected, our property is devalued just because we live in a community, Blacks still aren’t welcomed in certain professional sports, country clubs, and golf clubs, and more. We’re segregated from the rest of society in most areas that matter, because we have deemed anything concerning Blacks bad for White equity’s sake.
Putting a law in place and saying we Black people are equal to White people without providing appropriate remedies for the past defects in fairness and justice in all systems is like throwing a cup of urine on a bonfire.
It will not put the fire out. It will not stop the fire from growing bigger. In fact, the draft from the toss may just encourage the fire to grow out of control. And while America has created plenty of legislation to give the appearance they’ve attempted to rectify their sins, America has never put her money where her mouth is when it comes to making things right for us. Equity costs money. We can afford everything else except to pay for Black inequity.
You owe Black folks America for all the wrongs you’ve done to us, and until you do right by us, no good will to come to you.
Mitch’s Math On Slavery Is Wrong
Turtle faced Mitch McConnell said today, “I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea.” To add insult to injury, turtle face said, “The country has tried to address it over the years by fighting the Civil War, by approving civil rights legislation and even by election an African-American president.”
First of all, I don’t know what slavery education Mitch McConnell received, but they estimate the first slaves to have arrived in America was in May 1619. That’s 400-years ago, not the 150-years ago McConnell pulled out of his butt today in an effort to change history like White people have a habit of doing. He is attempting to erase 250-years of slavery from the history books. Not today buddy. Not today.
Second, Mitch gave the first Black President hell from the night he won to the day he left office. He and racist White politicians like him did nothing to address equality and equity on behalf of Black people when Obama was elected in 2008. He did the opposite. He made it impossible for Obama to help anyone without being labeled a Black lover. McConnell played the race card during Obama’s entire presidency to ensure he maintained White Supremacy in these racist states of America.
McConnell’s grandstanding and obstructing was nothing more than a rallying cry to get White people who believed a Black man should have never been in their White House. Some white people never believed Blacks should be made whole. They are simply happy to continue to compare disparities and claim they don’t know why Blacks can’t well. It’s even unfair to compare our achievement levels. We can’t possibly achieve in the same ways Whiteness can. We have a 400 year late start on most everything we need to survive and thrive here.
McConnell Says What Too Many White Folks Think Privately
Today, I believe Mitch McConnell said exactly what White people think, and what they believe in their hearts about equity in America. If they meant better, they’d do better. If White people are not about making their wrongs right, then they are not striving for equality, and they are definitely not in support of equity. They aren’t doing better because White people are all for the status quo.
Give me mines, screw yours Blacks.
If Whites were interested in righting wrongs, the racist systems and institutions we’ve had in place for four hundred years wouldn’t still exist. Systems like over-policing Black communities (formerly known as slave catching), segregated school systems and racist private schools (nationally), voter suppression (purging, poll taxes, redistricting, gerrymandering), employment discrimination (especially where government and civil employment), unfair banking and lending practices, the seizing of Black lands from Black farmers and sharecroppers, health and vehicle insurance pricing discrepancies, medical racism, biased and discriminatory media/television programming and news, and I could go on.
There is no equity in any system or institution in America that White people should be satisfied with. Nor should decent White people with working moral compasses feel they’ve done enough to rectify Black inequality and inequity. If you think this way, let me kindly inform you you have not done enough. And please spare me with your rainbow flags, your “I voted for Obama and I have a Black friend spill along with your donations to the ACLU or the racist Southern Poverty Law Center.
Equality and equity don’t come from voting, so please stop selling us that bullshit. Your. Votes. Don’t. Bring. Us. Equality.
Nor does it give us equity.
All voting does is keep the status quo the status quo, keeps the oppressed the oppressed, and keeps inequity and White Supremacy in their places.
I am so tired of White people and those passing as White making excuses for why they can’t make Black people, the ancestors of slaves whole in America. White people say they want equality, but no one really wants equity, because equity costs something. White folks and those passing will have to give up something, and they don’t like to share. They hate to lose. They also can’t admit their wrongs. Reparations is not only about admitting America was wrong formally, but it’s also an effort to make things right, fair, equal, or more equitable. Attempting to make Black people whole again is a great start to reconciliation.
“Allowing” America to have a Black president is not reparations for Black people. Claiming America fought the Civil War for Blacks is a lie and has absolutely nothing to do with reparations. Black folks received nothing for the Civil War, except the shirts on their backs.
Some kind of help that was.
How do you leave a legacy for generations of Black freedmen to come with just the shirt on your back? You don’t and you can’t.
How do White people like rich Mitch make things fair for Blacks in America without trying? He can’t and they won’t.
White people like Mitch McConnell, regardless of socioeconomic status or political affiliation are in love inequity, so don’t let a party line fool you. Just look at the reasons they encourage us to vote for someone. Our interests are never first. We’re never a priority.
White folks who think like Mitch McConnell love the power they’ve accrued for over 400 years. They have no intentions of letting go. They’ll let America burn to the ground before they give that power up.
See exhibit A:
White people, regardless of their socioeconomic status and/or educational attainment levels are fully aware how they have benefited and will continue to benefit by not providing reparations to Blacks.
White men like Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump also know the reparations scare tactic is a winning voting strategy they pull out each national elections to rally White believers of inequity where Blacks are concerned.
Today, Mitch McConnell said exactly what too many White folks think and believe and I’m glad. It’s time we stop hiding behind superficial political labels and worthless advocacy groups attempting to encourage White people to change their selfish ways.
Inequity is the reason for this and every political season for Whiteness. The blinders are off. Once seen, it can’t be unseen. If you’re not for equity, you’re for inequity. It’s as simple as that.
There is no middle of the road here.
